Ugly Betty: Review of Episode 5, Season 3

While the Wilhemina/Daniel and Betty/Kimmie arcs were well-written and hilarious, I was quite disappointed in the Justin/Bully arc (what’s his name, anyhow?). It seemed to lack depth and was way too simplistic. The last thing the Bully tells Justin is ‘Leave me alone’, and the next day at school he’s all nice to him? It didn’t seem realistic at all, especially since the Bully would probably have resented the fact that Justin had seen him crying.

The writers should have done one of two things:

1) not made the Bully cry; instead, he would have been aloof but Justin calls him out: “this really does mean a lot to you, doesn’t it?” The Bully shrugs it off, but Justin doesn’t fall for it. The next day at school, Justin is walking down the hall with his friend, and the Bully is walking towards them. The girl wants to avoid the Bully, but Justin stands his ground and says hi. The Bully looks at him and nods to acknowledge him with a small smile. It marks the beginning of a friendship.

2) the Bully cries and is angry at Justin for seeing him cry. The next day at school, Justin is walking down the hall with his friend, and the Bully is walking towards them. One of the bullies friends makes a nasty comment about Justin; the Bully doesn’t add to it or laugh, and just tells his friends to leave Justin alone.

I like the first option better, but either would have made more sense than the sudden love the Bully seems to want to shower on Justin.

I still love Ugly Betty though, and am looking forward to next week’s feud!
