About the Book, ‘Bulwark’:
Clay Finnes is the sheriff of a small town in Georgia called Bulwark. Recently separated from his wife, all he can think about is what went wrong, and will Jenna ever come back to him. He’s troubled by a bothersome reporter trying to build a story from what he thinks is a normal day in his life. Clay has to admit that the fantastical stories, told by an accident victim as well as unusual sightings of wolves, things are getting a bit strange. A visit to the ominous Gingerbread House makes him realize that his life as he knows it will never be the same.
Review of ‘Bulwark’, by Brit Lunden
There were strong Stranger Things vibes in this book—but unfortunately without the 1980s or a band of spunky preteens and teens.
Also, there are no Soviets wanting to get their hands on the Big Bad in town.
Overall, this was a pleasant (albeit creepy!) read, despite the typos and the sometimes sluggish writing. The cover does really well to set the mood of the entire book; without even cracking it open, we already have an idea of how things are going to turn in Bulwark. This slim novel wastes no time getting readers in the thick of it, but while the action never stops, the flow is just enough to keep the pages turning in anticipation. Character development was good within the confines of the length of the book. I did find most of it believable, although some of the interactions between Clay and his wife felt a little off.
As for the ending, well, there are two of them, and both are frustrating for all the right reasons. Which one happened? Which one didn’t? Are we going to have a set of parallel worlds going forward? Is one ending the one that should have happened, and the other, the one that was made to happen by the same evil we thought defeated?
Despite its mild weaknesses, Bulwark definitely leaves you wanting more. Until it comes, you can connect with the author through her website and on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
